  5.                  ARE YOUR FAMILY EDGE FILES ALREADY EXTRACTED?
  6.  
  7. If your copy of the program ALREADY has the self-extracting files extracted 
  8. into INSTALL.COM, TFESHARE.EXE, UTLSHARE, and DOCSHARE.TXT:
  9.      Copy INSTALL.COM and TFESHARE.EXE to the MASTER PROGRAM DISK, copy 
  10.      UTLSHARE to the MASTER UTILITY DISK, and copy DOCSHARE.TXT to the MASTER 
  11.      DOCUMENTATION DISK. Skip over the next section on extracting the files.

  14.                       EXTRACTING THE SELF-EXTRACTING FILES
  15.  
  16. If your self-extracting files have NOT been extracted, you will need to 
  17. EXTRACT these files from their compressed state. The first self-extracting 
  18. file, TFEB5a.EXE ("B5a" represents the Shareware Version number), will contain 
  19. the two files, INSTALL.COM and TFESHARE.EXE, for the MASTER PROGRAM DISK. The 
  20. second self-extracting file, UTLB5a.EXE, will contain the one file, UTLSHARE, 
  21. for the MASTER UTILITY DISK. The third self-extracting file, DOCB5a.EXE, will 
  22. contain DOCSHARE.TXT, the program manual, for the MASTER DOCUMENTATION DISK. 
  23. Here's the description of how to extract these self-extracting files 
  24. (initially, three files).
  25.  
  26. If you are using disk drives other than A: and B: to extract the files, 
  27. substitute their drive designations in the following instructions. To EXTRACT 
  28. these files:
  29.  
  30.      Place the disk containing the TFEB5a.EXE file in the A: drive, the Master 
  31.      PROGRAM Disk in the B: drive, close the drive doors, and type 
  32.

  35.      Place the disk containing the UTLB5a.EXE file in the A: drive, the Master 
  36.      UTILITY Disk in the B: drive, close the drive doors, and type 
  37.

  40.      Place the disk containing the DOCB5a.EXE file in the A: drive, the Master 
  41.      DOCUMENTATION Disk in the B: drive, close the drive doors, and type 
  42.

  45. These three disks are your MASTER disks. The MASTER PROGRAM DISK and the 
  46. MASTER UTILITY DISK are required to INSTALL the necessary Program and Utility 
  47. files used by THE FAMILY EDGE. The Master Documentation file can be used 
  48. directly to scan on screen or print out the Program Manual.

  50. The INSTALL.COM program (on the MASTER PROGRAM DISK) will provide the 
  51. necessary on-screen installation information for converting the files on the 
  52. MASTER PROGRAM DISK and the MASTER UTILITY DISK into the different WORKING 
  53. files needed to run THE FAMILY EDGE. After INSTALLING THE FAMILY EDGE, store 
  54. your MASTER DISKS in a safe place. They will be your insurance if you should 
  55. damage your Working Disks.

  58.                         PREPARING TO USE THE FAMILY EDGE
  59.  
  60. There are fourgs you must now do prior to using THE FAMILY EDGE.
  61.      
  62.      1) You must prepare blank formatted disks (for a floppy installation).
  63.      2) You must INSTALL the program.
  64.      3) If your CONFIG.SYS file was changed, you must REBOOT the computer.
  65.      4) Finally, you must CONVERT any existing data files to the new format 
  66.         using the CONVERT choice in the EDGEUTIL Utility Program.

  69.                      PREPARING BLANK FORMATTED FLOPPY DISKS
  70.  
  71. You will not need any floppy disks (other than your Master Disks) for a hard 
  72. disk installation. Besides your Master Disks, you will need a least three 
  73. blank formatted disks for a floppy disk installation. which will be prepared 
  74. WITHOUT the booting, or system, files. For a floppy disk installation, the 
  75. Program Files will take up ALL of the space on a normal 360K Working floppy 
  76. disk. If you are using this program on a computer with two 360K drives, YOU 
  77. WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BOOT YOUR COMPUTER OFF OF THE PROGRAM DISK. NOTE: If you 
  78. are using disk drives other than A: and B: to format the disks, substitute 
  79. their drive designations in the following instructions. To format a disk 
  80. WITHOUT the "system" files, place your DOS disk (the one with all your DOS 
  81. files, not necessarily your normal booting disk) in Drive A:, the disk to be 
  82. formatted in Drive B: and type

  86. Press the <ENTER> key. One of these disks will be for your Working Program 
  87. files, one will be for your Working Utility files, and one will be for your 
  88. first data disk.
  89.  
  90. ONLY if you have a 720K or larger drive (on a laptop, for example), you may 
  91. prepare a bootable disk for the Working Program files by placing your DOS disk 
  92. in Drive A:, placing the disk to be formatted in Drive B:, and typing
  93.

  96. Press the <ENTER> key. This disk, formatted with the MS-DOS system files in 
  97. place, will be your program disk. REMEMBER: This system format is for 720K OR 
  98. LARGER FLOPPY DISKS ONLY!!!! Otherwise, if running from a double floppy drive 
  99. computer, you must use the non-booting disk instructions.

  101. Mark one disk MASTER PROGRAM DISK. Mark one disk MASTER UTILITY DISK. Mark one 
  102. disk MASTER DOCUMENTATION DISK. 
  103.  
  104. Many users of the Shareware Version will be running THE FAMILY EDGE on a 
  105. computer equipped with only floppy disk drives, but we will go through the 
  106. installation procedure for both a hard disk equipped computer and a floppy 
  107. disk computer to cover all possible installations.

  111.                           RUNNING THE INSTALL PROGRAM

  114.                               THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
  115.  
  116. Your computer, when it first starts up, or BOOTS, will check the disk which 
  117. holds the booting DOS files to see if there is a file named CONFIG.SYS on that 
  118. disk. If there IS such a file, the computer will use the information in that 
  119. file to alter its basic configuration information; otherwise it will use its 
  120. standard internal default values. THE FAMILY EDGE requires that a CONFIG.SYS 
  121. file be present and that the statement FILES=40 (or FILES = a number larger 
  122. than 40) be in the CONFIG.SYS file. As part of the installation, the INSTALL 
  123. program will examine the CONFIG.SYS file (to see if the FILES statement allows 
  124. enough files to be opened). If your CONFIG.SYS file does need to be changed, 
  125. the INSTALL program will ask your permission and, if you give it, will make a 
  126. copy of your current CONFIG.SYS file under the name CONFIG.EDG, changing the 
  127. CONFIG.SYS file to the new defaults.

  130.                             FLOPPY DISK INSTALLATION
  131.  
  132. Label one of your blank floppy disks WORKING Program Disk. Label another blank 
  133. floppy disk WORKING Utility Disk. You will also need the disk that you 
  134. normally use to boot your computer. NOTE: If you are using a disk drive other 
  135. than Drive A: for the Master Disks, substitute that drive's designation in the 
  136. following instructions.

  138. Place the MASTER PROGRAM DISK (containing the INSTALL.COM and SHARETFE.EXE 
  139. files) in Drive A:, type A: and press <ENTER> (on some computers, the <ENTER> 
  140. key is marked <RETURN> or <CR>). You should now be logged on the A: Drive. 
  141. Type INSTALL and press <ENTER>. Follow the simple on screen instructions to 
  142. allow the INSTALL program to create the necessary Program and Utility files. 
  143. If your CONFIG.SYS file was changed during installation, you will need to 
  144. REBOOT your computer for that file to take effect. If you do need to reboot, 
  145. be sure you have your boot disk in the computer before rebooting.

  148.                              HARD DISK INSTALLATION
  149.  
  150. NOTE: If you are using a disk drive other than Drive A: for the Master Disks, 
  151. substitute that drive's designation in the following instructions.

  153. Place the MASTER PROGRAM DISK (containing the INSTALL.COM and SHARETFE.EXE 
  154. files) in Drive A:, type A: and press <ENTER> (on some computers, the <ENTER> 
  155. key is marked <RETURN>). You should now be logged on the A: Drive. Type 
  156. INSTALL and press <ENTER>. Follow the simple on screen instructions to allow 
  157. the INSTALL program to create the necessary Program and Utility files. If your 
  158. CONFIG.SYS file was changed during installation, you will need to REBOOT your 
  159. computer for that file to take effect.

  162.                          CONVERTING EXISTING DATA FILES

  164. First, make a backup copy of your Data and History Notes files. Load the 
  165. EDGEUTIL Utility program, select CONVERT, select FAMILY EDGE files, and follow 
  166. the on-screen instructions. ----- Happy EDGING!!!!
